Sensitive Amphibian Information in KRIS

Note From Dr. Hartwell Welsh, Redwood Sciences Laboratory, regarding the presence of southern torrent salamanders in Jackson Demonstration State Forest and the Noyo Basin:

The southern torrent salamander has been found 10 miles south of the Elk on the Mendocino coast (Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, U.C Berkeley, #65797). They occur at numerous inland Mendocino County sites in the vicinity of Branscomb (south fork Eel drainage). They have also been found in Parlin Creek in the Noyo watershed (Kitchen, 1992). Their present scarcity in the Noyo watershed, given the availability of appropriate microhabitats and the dominant forest types present, strongly suggests either a lack of adequate sampling or their historic extirpation due to habitat alterations from past land use activities."

Kitchen, D. 1992. Baseline studies of birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles and basic WHR analysis of wildlife on the Jackson State Demonstration Forest. Humboldt State University, Arcata CA. Dept. Wildlife & Fisheries. (Unpublished report)
