Click on image to enlarge (141K). This photo shows the rugged Big Sulphur Creek watershed looking east off the Geysers Road. While oaks proliferate on the near slopes, they only dot the grasslands in some places on the sun-facing east slopes. Some of the main production facilities of the Geysers are visible on the far slopes. Photo taken by Patrick Higgins on July 15, 2003. Photo by Patrick Higgins taken on July 15, 2003.
The hot, sun-facing slope of Geyser Peak supports trees only in draws where there is more moisture. The shoulders of the rocky peak are so dry that only drought adapted shrubs can survive. Photo by Patrick Higgins taken on July 15, 2003.
Looking down into the Big Sulphur Creek canyon to the east off Geysers Road shows Manzanita and madrone growing in the foreground, grasslands on the far slopes, and oak trees in the draw nearer the water. Photo taken by Patrick Higgins on July 15, 2003.

Geysers Road looking south at the wide gravel terrace of Big Sulphur Creek. High bedload transport here and high peaks flows may be preventing re-establishment of the riparian zone. Photo by Patrick Higgins taken on July 15, 2003.
This photo shows an inner gorge failure on Big Sulphur Creek looking south off the Geysers Road. Inner gorge mass wasting is common in this creek and is at least in part owing to very unstable bedrock geology and ancient slumps. Photo by Patrick Higgins taken on July 15, 2003.
