KRIS Klamath : Meta Information Page
This page contains detailed information about a data set in KRIS, including where the original data reside and how to contact the sources for the data. Data sets are linked to the appropriate page by means of the Meta Identifier. Many data sets can be linked to same page by sharing the same Meta Identifier.
Meta Identifier | ShastaRacks |
Type of Data | Fish counts |
Originator | Bill Chesney |
Description | Dataset contains the number of salmonid species passing upstream through the Shasta River Fish Counting Facility (also known as the Shasta Racks). It is the longest fish dataset in the Klamath basin, beginning in 1930 and continuing through the present. In 1998, video equipment was installed. The primary purpose of the facility is to count fall run Chinook, but steelhead and coho are also counted incidentally. Steelhead and coho data from 1996 to 2002 to were less readily available than fall Chinook data and lack of budget prevented updating in V 3.0 for the former species. |

Maint. and Update Freq. | Annual |
Serial Name | NA |
Purpose | For comparison of number of fall Chinook salmon passing the Shasta racks by week between years. |
Data Quality Information | Some fish may get by racks undetected and therefore annual run size may be slightly underestimated. Counting methods have changed and data quality in the late 1940's and early 1950's is suspect , counting racks had been moved upstream. |
Use Constraints | Data from the Shasta Racks allows fall Chinook estimates but coho and steelhead counts from the facility cannot be used to estimate populations (counting usually stops in December) |
Supplemental Information | California Dept of Fish and Game has published annual reports between 2000-2002, which are available in KRIS Version 3.0. |
