Caption: The coho salmon population in the Trinity River basin above Willow Creek has been estimated by the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) from 1977 to 2002. Grilse are also known as jack salmon and are generally precocious males that have spent only one year in the ocean. Many of the coho salmon spawning above Junction City may be returning to Trinity River Hatchery. The substantial difference between the number of fish above Willow Creek and those above Junction City suggests that there is a viable run of naturally reproducing coho salmon using tributaries below Junction City or the Trinity River mainstem. Please note that the data for year 2002 are provisional (draft). For a link to the CDFG reports which are the data source, click on Info Links.
