Trinity Dam and Lewiston Dam block down stream transport (recruitment) of gravel to spawning areas. In order to provide better spawning habitat, new gravels are brought to the river by truck and distributed with a front end loader. Photos provided by the Bureau of Reclamation. September 1989.

The area in the photo was chosen as a site for gravel placement. Salmon and steelhead often pick riffle crests such as this to spawn, where there is a transition from slow water at the back of a pool or run (at right) to faster water. Photos provided by the Bureau of Reclamation.
