Click on image to enlarge (152K). The bank at the Brazil Ranch, also known as Pastures of Heaven, was heavily eroded which threatened adjacent fields. Photo provided by the Siskiyou Resource Conservation District.
Heavy equipment was used to lay back the bank and to import large rock for armoring. The California Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Klamath Restoration Program funded this project. Photo provided by the Siskiyou Resource Conservation District.
Willow cuttings were placed within and behind riprap material. The willows subsequently sprout and as the trees grow the root materials help to hold the bank, including the riprap, together. Photo provided by the Siskiyou Resource Conservation District.
Willow cuttings and cottonwood poles were acquired from riparian areas near the project. Photo provided by the Siskiyou Resource Conservation District.

This photo is of the top of the bank at the restoration project on the Brazil Ranch just after completion. The stubs of trees that look like stumps are actually pole of willow and cottonwood that were deep planted using a backhoe. See the next sequence of pictures (Tour: Restoration Brazil/Pastures of Heaven Complete) to see the project after it had weathered the January 1997 flood.
