Click on image to enlarge (37K). This photo shows a tail water recovery project in early stages of development on the Ekstrom property along the Shasta River. Agricultural return water may be very warm and nutrient rich. The purpose of the project is to allow aquatic and emergent plants to strip nutrients from the tailwater, and allow it to return to the river subsurface, transferring heat to the ground.
Old oxbow containing tailwater project on Ekstrom Ranch showing fenced wetland areas and unfenced grazed areas. The wetland vegetation that is growing within the fenced area will act as a filter for nutrient rich tailwater coming off pastures. Picture taken at the same location as Picture #1 but from a different angle. Note the increased vegetation in the fenced off wetland area.
This photo shows the infiltration pond and wetland on Ekstrom Ranch immediately upstream of the berm showing the old oxbow that the tailwater project uses.
More well established wetland vegetation, including willows inside the tailwater recovery project on the Ekstrom Ranch. This allows the water to filter slowly into the river stripping it of nutrients and eliminating its stored heat.
Downstream face of berm backing up irrigation tailwater into an old oxbow of the Shasta River on the Ekstrom Ranch. The 2x4 inch welded wire fence was added to the barbed wire fence to prevent access to beavers.
