Click on image to enlarge (86K). Dave Webb, Shasta CRMP coordinator, looks over an area in need of bank stabilization on the Freeman Ranch in 1997. The pink flag is the downstream end of the area to be treated.
This photograph shows bank failure at right which threatens trees recently planted on the Freeman Ranch as part of riparian restoration projects (stakes at right are associated with cages which protect new tree starts).
Dave Webb confers with Jim Fitzgerald on a bank stabilization project along the Shasta River on the Freeman Ranch. The willows piled in the background are secured to the bank and trap silt, which rebuilds banks and prevents further erosion. This technique is effective on the Shasta because flood peaks are buffered by Dwinell Dam. See Easton Ranch photos that show effectiveness of this technique.
