Fish screens can keep young salmon and steelhead from being lost in diversion canals. The challenge in design is to get one that serves that purpose but also requires low maintenance.

Photo shows first prototype tube fish screen during initial field testing at Meamber Ranch. River water is drawn into the pump sump being viewed in the previous picture when tailwater is insufficient to meet Don Meamber's irrigation needs. This screen design works well in the Shasta River during low flow conditions in summer and can be removed from the river after the irrigation season to avoid damage during high flows.
