Water Quality: Dissolved Oxygen Navarro River Estuary 1996-97 |
|
Caption: The chart shows dissolved oxygen (DO) samples taken in the Navarro River Estuary in 1996 and 1997. Notes associated with the data indicate that the sand bar at the mouth of the estuary closed near September 24, 1996 and opened again about December 19, 1996. The data reveal a dramatic drop in DO (anoxic conditions) in the estuary during the time of estuary closure. Salmonids can function normally at DO above 8 mg/l but exhibit stress at levels below 6 mg/l (Barnhart, 1986). Note that oxygen depletion only took place at depth and salmonids would avoid this anoxic zone. See Info Links for more information.
